Gel Cola Candle Project

Many thanks to Cristina for contributing this project

cola gel candle

Step 1 Prepare your work area - gather your materials - turn your stove on low or to 200°F if you have a thermostat on your boiler.

Step 2 Place the gel in your melting pot. Put the melting pot on your stove or boiler and start heating. Take care not to get any water in your container or gel - it will ruin your candle.

Step 3 When gel has liquified (around 200°F) you are ready to add the colour and scent. Using a dropper and liquid dyes, add the dye little by little as it is easier to add more colour than more gel! You can achieve a cola colour using brown or ivory liquid dyes or by mixing yellow, blue and green. Stir gently until the colour is well dissolved. Once you have the colour that you want, it’s time to add the scent. The amount you use depends on the type of gel you are using. Use cola or black cherry scent but make sure you check with your supplier that the fragrance is gel safe.

Step 4 Attach your wick tab to the bottom centre of the container either with hot glue or a small piece of double back tape. Pour the gel into the glass slowly but smoothly. Do not fill it all the way up to the top. Leave about an inch left at the top. Gently tap the sides of the container and allow 45 seconds for the air bubbles to rise if necessary. Keep adjusting the wick so that it is central as the gel cools. You are not permitted to use coca cola glasses as these are trademarked.

Step 5 Melt some paraffin wax in a double boiler. You may add additives if you prefer but I just leave it white and sometimes add some stearic to make it whiter.

Step 6 After the gel has cooled enough that nothing will sink in it and the wax has melted, you are ready for the froth/ foam. You can pour some of the wax into an aluminum bowl and add a little of the cola or black cherry scent. Then, when the wax has formed a thin film on the top, start whipping it with a fork. Whip the wax until it looks nice and frothy/foamy. When it looks ready and is the desired frothiness you can use a spoon or fork and start putting it in the glass over the gel. Be sure that the wick continues to stay centered. Repeat the whipping and pouring until it is up to the top off the glass. And there you have your finished cola gel candle :-)
