Hurricane candles
This gorgeous hurricane candle is a lot simpler to make than it looks.
As always, refer to the basic candle making safety procedure.
You will need:
Double boiler
a core pillar candle made with low melt point wax
High melt point paraffin wax
Plastic additive
Thermometer
Wicking needle
Scissors
Large mould - at least 1" wider and taller than your core candle
Mould seal
Silk flowers or other objects for embedding
Water bath
Step 1
Make your core candle using a lower melt point wax and no additives. This is
to keep the wax nice and soft as it burns. Make sure the primed wick at least 3
inches longer than needed.
Step 2
Thread the wick of your core candle through the hole in the larger mould.
You can either use a wicking needle for this, or bend the wick
at a 45 degree angle and you will find that it is a lot easier to get it
into the hole! The bottom of the larger mould will become the top of your candle.
Remember to seal up the hole in the larger mould with mould seal.
Step 3
Fill the gap between the core candle and the outside of your larger
mould with your choice of embedment. For this example I have used silk flowers.
DO NOT attempt this with dried flowers - they look beautiful to begin with but
eventually go brown! Trust me on this one! Anything very light will tend to
float to the top, so make sure it is nicely packed in.
Step 4
While you are filling the mould, begin to heat the wax for the outer shell.
Use either 5% plastic additive or a higher melt point wax. The shell needs to
be harder than the core candle so it does not melt while the candle burns. Do not add vybar. Vybar
increases opacity and you want your hurricane to be translucent.
Step 5
Pour the melted wax slowly into the gap between the core and the edge of
the outer mould. Allow to sit for a couple of minutes and transfer to a
water bath. The water bath is essential to aid transparency.
* Be sure to only burn the candle for 4-5 hours at a time and no more.
Obviously, no matter how high the melt point of the outer shell, if the candle
is burned continuously for a long period of time, it will begin to soften. If
you have used flammable objects such as the silk flowers in this project, then
the candle has the potential to become a torch if it isn't burned with due
care and caution. Saying that, when burned properly, these candles have a
gorgeous inner glow and enhance the atmosphere in any room.
